If you head down to Duryu Park, Daegu this weekend you’ll catch a festival that celebrates a tasty side of modern Korean culture: Chimac.

Chimac is a portmanteau of English and Korean words – ‘chicken’ in English and maekju in Korean, which means beer. Yep, this festival’s theme is fried chicken and beer. The fried chicken business is huge in Korea, and the Chimac combo has had a lot of international exposure through dramas like My Love from the Star and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo where the characters regularly tuck in.

Daegu Chimac Festival is now in its fifth year, and over one million visitors attended last year.

The festival is free to enter although some activities may require separate payment. There are chicken eating and beer drinking competitions, an EDM party and live music performances, plus a Horror Theatre among other attractions. Visit the official website’s English page for more info, but hurry – the last day is 23 July.
