Awards season is finally upon us! The week kicked off to a strong start with the 75th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night. While the night gave us some memorable moments, we all eagerly await the next set of awards ceremonies.
This Monday, the full nominations list for the 2018 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) was released, including Park Chan Wook’s The Handmaiden — the first ever Korean film to receive a BAFTA nomination.
The Handmaiden is one of five movies that have been nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. It competes against Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (France), Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father (Cambodia), Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Loveless (Russia), and Asghar Farhadi’s Salesman (Iran).
Wook’s period masterpiece is set in colonialist Japan and tells the story of an Japanese heiress who has inherited a fortune and a handmaiden hired by a man who wishes to steal her wealth. The movie is based on the novel “Fingersmith” by Sarah Waters and stars Kim Min Hee, Kim Tae Ri, Ha Jun Woo and Jo Jin Woong.
We congratulate Park Chan Wook on this prestigious nomination and wish all the nominees good luck!
The 71st British Academy Film Awards takes place on February 18, 2018, 11:00 AM PST.
