MV Monday this week takes a look at the next SHINee member to take on a solo project, Jonghyun. The Base EP features collaborations with Zion T, Younha and Iron, and even features lyrics written by Wheesung.

The title track comes in the form of Crazy (Guilty Pleasure), featuring Polaris Entertainment rapper Iron. It has been quoted as a ‘neo-soul punk inspired retro pop song’, an extremely convoluted way of saying experimental pop.

Just as in SHINee’s last release we see Jonghyun reference his competitors in subtle ways to emphasise his ability to stand amongst the industries best.

With visual references to successful tracks such as Jay Park’s Metronome, Taeyang’s Eyes, Nose, Lips, Jaejoong’s Mine, and T.O.P’s Doom Dada to name but a few one should easily be able to associate Crazy with the success of Jonghyun’s contemporaries.

Crazy is about a woman he is so addicted to it makes him crazy, she is enticing and dangerous. The craziness Jonghyun feels is portrayed by the Escher-like staircases behind him. The dangerous enticement of the woman is portrayed by a spider. The spider has spun her web and trapped him.

Just as with Taemin’s solo concept, Jonghyun keeps the stylish edge of SHINee in his image.

The Crazy mv focuses in majority on Jonghyun’s voice, and the feeling of the track, and rightly so. Despite EXO being the cash cow of SMTown, SHINee are their most technically brilliant group and such elaborate showcases of their talents, individually and collectively, should be celebrated.

Other video highlights in the past week include: R&B act Alshain’s release Reception, which sees a dancer haunted by images of her ex, mostly played out in a disjointed reverse; Navi’s emotional At The Han, an mv which shows the ending of a once loving relationship; the simple but striking Fire mv from Mad Clown; and the release of the BTS intro choreography from their MBC Gayo Daejun stage. The choreo video shows their routine using three different kinds of filming, and many believe this is in response to the shooting choices of MBC, which resulted in a poor view of the BTS stage.

Which Kpop video release was your favourite in the last week?
