SM explain the concept for this iteration of SMTOWN as follows:

This SMTOWN 2022 project, with the concept of ‘SMCU EXPRESS,’ expands the artist’s worldview, which was newly named ‘Metaversal Origin Story’ by Chief Producer Soo-Man Lee based on SMCU (SM Culture Universe). In addition to the live performances, the project includes an album as well as a live exhibit at the SM Entertainment headquarters in Seoul, Korea, giving a comprehensive experience to the future contents of the metaverse as viewed by Lee and SM.
