EXO’s Baekhyun is on a non-stop upward trajectory. He has dominated the Kpop industry, with his chart-topping 2020 release “Delight” as well as his role as leader of the mega-group SuperM.
This month, Baekhyun released his eponymous Japanese album. With this album, he not only showcases the god-like voice that EXO-Ls adore, but he also explores many new genres with prowess. Let’s get into the review.
The title track “Get You Alone” is a cheeky and catchy tune with jazz influences. This song is the gift that keeps on giving – the more you listen to it, the more you discover all the exciting nuances, such as vocal riffs and instrumental turns. Baekhyun’s creamy vocals are so deliciously smooth, you’ve got to be careful you don’t slip!
The next track, “Addicted” has that classic SM Entertainment sound – richly textured, contemporary and a little wacky, not to mention the high-quality singing, of course. Baekhyun’s vocalisations stand out in particular, and it’s fair to say that all those that listen to this song will become addicted to Baekhyun in no time.
It should come as no surprise that “WHIPPIN’” is my favourite B side. In this sexy track, Baekhyun proves himself as a rapper and he bridges the gap between pop and hip hop smoothly. This song is both powerful and playful, making it one to remember. Not to mention the heart stopping lyric, “coffee cream, berry cream or honey cream”.
“Drown” is definitely another fan favourite – it is a dark and sexy RnB inspired tune, with daring sing-rap elements and a catchy trap beat. This one’s going to be on repeat, for sure.
“I just want to drown in your body.”
“Disappeared” starts off with an acoustic guitar solo, which elegantly sets the mood for the rest of the album. The tempo of this song is slower than the preceding tracks, but fear not, that does not mean this song is boring. In fact, with the muted instrumental, listeners get to experience Baekhyun’s voice in all its glory.
The last track on the album “Stars” is a ballad with a dreamy and cosmic feel. It is the perfect comfy ending to a great album. Let Baekhyun’s soothing voice take you to the stars…
There’s no denying that Baekhyun is one of the biggest players in the Kpop industry. With each release, his music gets more varied, daring and expressive. He’s got his eyes on the prize, that’s for sure. And we’ve got our eyes on him.
