GFriend are a six-member girl group that debuted this year. They work under Source Music and have enjoyed a very positive response and a good amount of success even though they are very new idol rookies from a relatively small company.
The members are: Sowon (Leader), Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB and Umji. They are all young girls with ages ranging from 17-19 years old.
So far, they have released two EPs: Season of Glass (from which they released an MV for ‘Glass Bead’) and Flower Bud (from which they released and MV for ‘Me Gustas Tu’).
The girls have a very innocent and sweet image. This is compounded by the fact that they have often dressed in whites and blues, and have kept their long hair naturally black or slightly brown in colour. They give off an incredibly ‘girl-next-door’ vibe and it is clear that their beauty is aimed to be natural-looking and soft.
Their sound has been quite retro in the sense that it may have listeners recalling the K-Pop sounds of the late 90s and early 2000s. They have shown quite bouncy and melodic tunes that are reminiscent of first generation idol girl groups like S.E.S and Fin.K.L
Some of the members have already appeared on variety shows including ‘SBS Running Man’, as well as MBC’s ‘Weekly Idol’ and ‘King of Masked Singer’. They have also had a few guest appearances in other artists’ MVs – Sowon appears in both of Rainbow’s ‘To Me’ and ‘Tell Me Tell Me’ videos, whilst Yerin guested in M&D’s ‘I Wish’ and Eunha in Yoo Seung Woo’s ‘You’re Beautiful. The group have even already secured their own reality TV show entitled: ‘GFriend! Take Care Of My Puppy’.
GFriend have had a great start as a group and they seem to have won people over not only with their music, but also with their light-hearted attitudes and good senses of humour.
