This week’s [Fun Story OTW] is not so fun, but nonetheless it is something that is heart-warming, sweet and worthy of comment.
A fan of SHINee member Key posted a photo of their wrist to their Instagram account. This was to show off the bracelet that they were wearing which featured Key’s name, however many cuts and evidence of scarring were also visible along the individual’s arm. Given this, as well as the fact that the word ‘cutter’ is in their Instagram username, it is simple to come to the conclusion that this particular Key fan is a frequent self-harmer.
Key himself came across the photo and was obviously moved enough to message the fan directly:
The message, written in English, reassured the fan that everyone has hard times in life and told them straight to stop doing it. Key even revealed that he himself had self-harmed in the past. He then told the fan that he would be by their side during this difficult time and that he expected the fan to show him that they were no longer self-harming through their Instagram posts.Understandably, the fan seemed very surprised to have the idol reach out to them personally, and promptly promised to not self-harm anymore, even uploading a video showing them throwing blades away.
Whilst the subject matter here is very tough and upsetting, we cannot deny how wonderful it id that the SHINee member used his position as an idol to influence a fan to do the right thing and stop hurting themselves.
It shows that the pain a difficulties that life gives really do affect all of us, even those that seem to have the most perfect of lives. Self-harming is never the answer, but many often see it as their only coping mechanism. Hopefully Key’s kindness and honesty has shown many fans that they are not alone and that they can get through things without harming themselves.
