The very first Korea-UK Creative Industries forum was held on the 20th November as part of the ROK-UK Creative Industries Forum 2014. There were many areas discussed during this forum, and plans were outlined for the bond between United Kingdom and South Korea to be strengthened through their respective creative industries. This could mean a bright and mutually benefiting future for both countries.
The term ‘creative industries’ is a little slippery and hard to define. However, many reading this may already be familiar with the term, as many governments see it as a vital part of future economies.
In short, it is the idea that creative and skilled individuals, mixed together with modern business paradigms and technology are the future in terms of making money for societies.
Minister Kim Jong Deok the MCST and Secretary of State Sajid Javid from the UK’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport discussed their plans for a strong bond between South Korea and Great Britain in this area.
“This forum is being held as a follow-up to the MOU on cooperation in the cultural and creative industries that was signed by Korea and the United Kingdom last November. It will serve as an opportunity to expand the cultural content market through exchanges and cooperation, especially in the areas of exchanges of human resources, broadcasting, movies, animation, fashion and theater.”
– Kim Jong Deok
Minister for Culture, Sports and Tourism (South Korea).
“This summer, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra made the stage at the BBC Proms. Also, Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ was in our Top Ten chart for nearly half a year. Now, two great countries get together to share ideas and expertise. It will provide us an opportunity to learn from each other and to foster cooperation.”
– Sajid Javid
Secretary of State: Department of Culture Media and Sport (UK)
Hopefully the plans for the UK and South Korea’s creative industries to share an open and reciprocal relationship will come to fruition and result in an even stronger and more solid bond between the two countries in the future!
