Usually artists who insist on weaving their own name into their song lyrics get only the cynical eyebrow from me, but for Mamamoo I’ll make an exception. What is it about their sound that makes it so damn… stylish? The swingy jazz beat? The smooth vocals? The random English? Whatever it is, my toe is a-tapping and I just can’t stop it now.

The all-female quartet of Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein and Hwasa officially debuted in June this year with the track Mr Ambiguous from the album Hello. However, they’d already made a dent on the charts thanks to collaborations with Bumkey, K.will, Wheesung and VIXX. Repaying the favour, Bumkey plus a host of other idols appeared in their first MV, including CNBLUE’s Jonghyun.

Last month the girls released their second album, Piano Man, and the title track MV’s features a guest appearance by B1A4’s Gongchan. With such good idol connections, a unique style of smooth vocals and big band swagger behind them, Mamamoo are definitely one to watch. And re-watch.
