Mamamoo have maintained their own distinct stamp since their debut in 2014, their impressible vocals as well as having a good ratio of rapping and just have an overall goofy, likable personalities have helped gain their growing numbers of fans.

1. Taller Than You
Sassy and practically overflowing with confidence and charisma. The members all take turns in picking on each other based on their height, there’s even brief appearance of a ‘Jessi’ parody. The inspiration of this song could have been inspired by the hip hop show ‘Unpretty Rapstar’, with the group having a joint stage with one of the contestants. Out of all the songs on this album, this is definitely the one that stands out as the odd one out. Though, the group still put their own twist in the hip hop styled music. It’s good to see that they’re open to experimenting with different genres

2. Words Don’t Come Easy
Instantly, the transition of music switches. Or, strange as this may sound, the instrumental especially at the start is like the music you would hear if you’re familiar with The Sims. At least, that’s the impression I got from a first listen. The vocals are soft, gentle and soothing on the ears, draws the listener in. It has a touch of feminine almost seductive style.
3. You’re the Best
The main word that comes to mind with this song is that it’s infectious. It’s one of the title songs that is being promoted, jazzy undertones as if the music was composed to match their fiery attitudes. It’s easy to see why this was picked as the main song, it’s so upbeat and catchy to sing to. The song matches Mamamoo’s trademark style of music. It’s a love song, as per the norm of most concepts, but with a uplifting message. Much like the MV for ‘Um Ah Oh Yeh’, it’s bright and full of energy. Like with 1cm, you can see the bond and chemistry between the members.
Congratulations to the girls for winning their first No.1 with this song!
4. Friday Night (feat. Junggigo)
The only song that features another artist Junggigo, who is well known for being one half of the duo for the song ‘Some’ with Sistar’s Soyou. He adds a tender touch to the song. Daydream like music, singing is kept simple and low key yet still remains effortless. Harmonies is something common with this group, it’s always done well. It’s definitely a duet type of song that I would recommend.
5. My Hometown
Within the few first seconds of the song, it seems like the sort of music you would hear in an elevator. Accompanied with Mamamoo’s range of vocals, there’s an added flare that brings the music to life. Slow flow, goes over memories which brings a nostalgic feeling. The emotion is raw, like when you think of the good times during your childhood when they might have been simpler and wonder how quickly time has flown by.
6. Emotion
I had an old school pop vibe from this song. It’s like a throwback to the generations of pop music that has evolved over time. Mamamoo have a knack for releasing feel good music. This girl group doesn’t have a tendency to stick to a particular genre or sound, which is something you’ll find with this album. If anything they seem to be inspired by different musical periods – it allows them to grow together and nurtures their talents.
7. I Miss You
The speed slows down for a ballad, the music mirroring the general feel. This song really shows off their vocals, it’s raw and striped back. The title is quite self-explanatory, the girls are crooning over a lost love. The vibe is similar to Sting from their previous album. The lyrics implied thinking over the memories of a past loved one. This is like hitting rock bottom, going through the numbing feeling of recovering from a heartbreak and trying to adjust however struggling to cope with a few attempts being in vain.
8. Funky Boy
The pace quickly picks up once again. A Burlesque style comes to mind with this song, I feel like if there was going to be an MV or a performance of this song, I would think something along the lines of Sistar’s ‘Give it To Me’. Lyrics points to being in a relationship, the petty arguments and conflicts of personalities and opinions. This song has a ‘No No No’ kind of vibe from ‘Pink Funky’. The girls sing about being sick and tired of being criticized and as always, are very assertive with their opinions.
9. Recipe
Just like with Emotion, it’s another song with a similar kind of style once again. Mamamoo like incorporating different eras of music into their songs. What I can understand the meaning of the song has something to do with food. There’s a sentence in the song which stated: ‘I’m the chef’ and ‘No more recipe’. This maybe referring to not following instructions but cooking by their own way? It seems to portrays the stereotypical woman – ‘homemaker’, by having the food by the time the partner or husband is home. Or, it could just be symbolizing their love and appreciation through cooking. It depends on how you look at it.
10. Cat Fight
Mamamoo really match the older styles of music, they’re particularly feisty in this song with lines like ”Don’t you mess with me’ being thrown around. I feel Moonbyul stands out here, as her rapping tends to take a backseat on some of their songs. As to be expected, there is a number of references to felines. There seems to be an analogy to how girls may act, or in this case ‘cats’ looking down on them by thinking they’re better. The sentence – ‘This is my jungle’ implies a territorial statement, they girls doesn’t like strangers or outsides challenging them, especially if their boyfriend or partner is involved in the matter.
11. Just
We’re nearly at the end with the last but one song is a slow track. Just by the music alone, you would assume that it’s a sad song however the lyrics paints a completely different story – it seems to create a scenario of dealing with the aftermath of a break-up, the turbulent roller coaster journey that has its highs and its lows. Like being able to go on with life and learn to cope, however the crippling feelings creep up, the hurting stage is brought to light thus prompting healing process to begin once more.
12. Girl Crush
This was a OST song, having be released for a while now. It’s a upbeat song to finish off the album. It’s full of confidence and attitude. The girls refer to themselves as a being a ‘girl crush’. They highlight being confident with their own beauty and body, having their own independence – for example being able to make money and not caring what people think about them. Which is something that we often tend to focus on. It’s easy said than done sometimes. However, it’s a another good, empowering message that we all need to hear.
