K-Music 2019 are holding a Pansori concert on Sunday 5th October.
Pansori is an epic storytelling genre from Korea. A single singer tells a story that spans from two to eight hours, accompanied by a single drummer, who provides rhythmic accompaniment and shouts of encouragement. The genre has been recognised for its artistic value as a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The concert, organised by Korea Pansori Preservation Association, will preserve this tradition. Twelve highly respected vocalists and live musicians will tell the five ancient stories of Pansori: Jeokbyukga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Chunhyangga, and Sugungga.
This performance will be subtitled in English. Tickets are £15 (plus booking fee) and can be bought here.
You can find out more information on Facebook.
As well as this, SOAS will be hosting a Pansori workshop on Saturday 6th October. The aim of the workshop is to learn the singing and drumming accompaniment of this epic storytelling genre.
There is no need to sign up for this, as they have asked people to show up at the venue.
