Twice, known for their bubblegum pop hits such as “Cheer Up” and “Signal”, have released their fifth extended play. Entitled, “What is Love?”, the album was released just yesterday (April 9th) and features the lead promoted single, which is the same title as the EP and was produced by JYP. (The following tracks reviewed are those featured on the digital/online version of the album, therefore the track “Stuck” will not be reviewed.)

First on the mini is the “What is Love?”. The beat is similar to many other Twice promoted tracks with their familiar trademark sound, and while doesn’t do well in originality being almost the same instrumental as their Japanese single “Candy Pop”, it is still a bubbly retro electro-pop track that gives off a warm feeling of discovering what love truly is. Focusing on the music video itself, its a striking montage of clips featuring the members in different settings, based off of iconic films from the likes of Pulp Fiction and Leon: The Professional. It has accumulated around 11 million views already by the publication of the article, despite the music video being released only a day ago, highlighting the amazing power of Twice’s fanclub – the Onces!

The remaining four songs are “Sweet Talker” which was penned by members Chaeyong and Jeongyeon, the swinging upbeat sound of “Ho!”, the dubstep breakdown infused “Dejavu” and “Say Yes”, a more slow and soulful closing track to the album.

Debuting in late 2015 with their first mini-album “Ooh-ahh”, Twice have released an incredible discography in under three years under their label JYP Entertainment, with a Japanese debut as well in 2017! Their first Japanese single “One More Time” reached no. 1 on the Oricon and Japan Billboard Hot 100 charts. The group’s next release is another Japanese single, entitled “Wake Me Up” and is scheduled for May 16th!
