The return of Kpop super group BIGBANG has been much anticipated, and long waited for. After three years their road to their new album MADE begins with the May 1st release of two tracks and accompanying mvs. First up is Loser.
Loser encompasses a number of feelings: inadequacy; loneliness; unfulfillment; to name but a few.
We see this in the narratives played out by each member.
G Dragon’s narrative largely revolves around unfulfillment – he is blessed with a privileged life though his unhappiness and emptiness is clear. Taeyang shows his struggle with guiding his life down a just path, ever fearful that sin will find its way into his life. Seungri feels inadequate finding his girlfriend is cheating.
Most prominent are the narratives of Daesung and T.O.P. Daesung’s feels weak and inadequate despite trying to prove himself repeatedly, he seems never able to pick himself back up.
T.O.P’s life brings him all he could want, though it is not all he needs, it is unsatisfying and lonely.
All of these situations bring desperation, thus the conclusion that one is a loser. It is Daesung’s story that sees the desperate need to prove ones self, yet feeling continued failure. It is T.O.P’s story that sees him desperately act out to stop his questioned choice. However in his desperation his actions are even more self-sacrificial. By seemingly killing the girl T.O.P has not improved his situation, only sunk deeper into his negative one.
However as the track comes to an end the five walk together, important for their return after five years and symbolic of their strength as a team, as a family, despite their solo ventures. It is with each other that being a loser becomes irrelevant.
