Have you heard of LDN Noise? If you haven’t, you’ve probably heard SHINee’s View or even f(x)’s 4 Walls. Red Velvet’s Dumb Dumb and EXO’s Monster, are also some of the songs on the writer-duo (Greg Bonnick and Hayden Chapman)’s incredibly extensive CV. In fact, the latter song actually features sounds and melodies, such as the introduction noise as well as the baseline which had been parts of older projects, which they eventually scrapped. SM were adamant that EXO would have a slick, strong comeback song, and Monster turned out to be just that. In fact, SM have had LDN Noise write nine of the group’s tracks, including Forever which is featured on their latest album, “The War”.
The pair praise K-Pop’s musical diversity; something not only their own catalogue boasts, but also recent releases. BlackPink’s As If It’s Your Last offers a retro-esque chorus as well as a set of heavily contemporary sounding verses. EXO’s Louder has a trap and hip-hop nod to its slick electric beat and stylistically auto-tuned vocals. There are combinations of sounds that are experimented in within K-Pop which are found less frequently in other genres of music. This is something which has inspired LDN Noise, who now envision themselves putting more time and energy into the industry. In the interview with Billboard, Bonnnick also states that he would like to create an EP featuring Korean artists, or create his own group.
The pair are incredibly inventive, and it’s evident in the work they produce. Red Velvet’s The Red Flavour features an animal-sound sampling titled “Zoo”. It’s clear that there is artistic inspiration to be found everywhere. We can’t wait to see what the London-based writers and producers showcase next!
