Hungry, but no time or money to sit down for a hearty meal? Samgak kimbap 삼각김밥, seaweed-wrapped rice triangles, can easily fill that gap. The crispy seaweed, fluffy rice and simple filling makes a good snack on the go or can be paired with other things to make more of a meal. Cheese in the Trap‘s posh kid Yoo Jung may have found it difficult to get to grips with one, but you’ll find it simple to buy, make and eat wherever you are.

In Korea, you can find samgak kimbap at any convenience store, many with English translations on the wrapper. Expect to pay up to 900KRW for one. Fillings vary, but popular flavours are beef (bulgogi), kimchi, and tuna mayonnaise. I even picked up a Cheese in the Trap kimchi and cheese variety on a recent trip to 7-11 in Seoul.

At home, you can make them easily if you can get your hands on the triangular mold and seaweed sheets. Like this handy set. You can also make them with ordinary seaweed sheets like this. Try and eat them not too long after making them; 2-3 days tops is best. Keep them refrigerated and you can zap them in the microwave if the rice hardens.

Here’s a video instruction of how to make tuna or kimchi samgak kimbap using the pre-prepared seaweed sheets and molds.
