Twice are a newly debuted girl group from JYP Entertainment. There are nine members in total, all hailing from different parts of Asia. Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Daehyun and Chaeyoung are South Korean, Momo, Sana and Mina are Japanese and maknae Tzuyu is Taiwanese.
The name Twice was chosen because the girls are purported to “wow their fans once through their ears and twice through their eyes”. Despite only debuting this year, all the girls have been active for quite a while in many different things. The members have appeared in many different MVs of their labelmates’ songs in the past, including GOT7’s ‘Girls Girls Girls’, Jun.K’s ‘No Love’ and Miss A’s ‘Only You’. Nayeon also had a cameo appearance in the 2012 drama ‘Dream High 2’.
Back in 2014 the first announcements of a new girl group were made by JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin Young. Trainee Lena (who featured in Sunmi’s track ‘Full Moon’) was stated to be a member at this time, but her departure from the company meant that the group’s debut was postponed. The final member line up was to be decided through the survival show ‘Sixteen’. JYP stated that he was on the lookout for a group that had an edgier style than the other girl groups under the label. He suggested that Twice would have more of an emphasis on hip hop and rap than Wonder Girls and Miss A have had.
The girls have released their first mini album ‘The Story Begins’, and their first MV ‘Like OOH-AHH’ has over 17 million views at the time of writing. The group have already made many appearances on various television shows, including: ‘TwiceTV’, ‘After School Club’ and ‘Weekly Idol’.
Even though it is still very early days for these girls, they have gotten off to a very successful start and show a lot of promise for the future. Here are a few videos that will help you familiarise yourself with the girl group if you haven’t done so already:
